Don’t Take Chances with Chipped Teeth – Dentist Sandy Springs

In the movies, a simple pratfall usually gets a big laugh, and a resulting chipped tooth can have the audience rolling in the aisles.  But in real life, a chipped tooth due to trauma is no laughing matter.
Besides possible pain and damage, a chipped tooth can cause a lot of embarrassment.

If you have a chipped tooth, you're not alone!  In fact, chipped teeth are the most common dental injury today.  While a chipped tooth can range in terms of size and damage, any type of dental trauma deserves immediate attention.  Although a small chip will most likely not cause pain, you should contact a dentist to make sure there is no other damage to the tooth's structure.  A dentist will be able to rule out accompanying cracks or internal dental problems when examining your chipped tooth.

More significant damage should definitely not be ignored!  A broken tooth may result in an exposed nerve, which can cause a great deal of pain. A completely knocked-out tooth can actually be saved if you act quickly.  Regardless of your dental emergency, contact your dentist right away.

If we can be of service, please do not hesitate to contact our office.  We offer complimentary consultations all our patients, new and old.  We serve Metro Atlanta, including Sandy Springs East Cobb, Buckhead, Roswell, Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Dunwoody, Vinings, Acworth, Woodstock and Smyrna.

Dental Emergency? Physician or Dentist? Sandy Springs Dentist

If you have ever had one, you know a toothache can be very painful.  And in some instances a toothache can be considered a dental emergency.  But there may be some symptoms of a toothache that cause you to wonder whether or you should see a physician or a dentist. Events like a knocked out tooth or other injury of the mouth can often be resolved quickly if you see an emergency dentist.

What exactly is an emergency dentist? Whether you know it or not, it most likely is your very own family dentist.  Many dentists offer emergency hours and on call services for dental emergencies.  If not, you may be able to find a clinic that specializes in emergency dentistry.  These facilities are open 24 hours a day just for emergencies. Either way, you can be assured that you can find help when you need it.

Most likely, if you visit a physician for your dental emergency, he will give you medication to help you over the weekend until you can see a dentist.  Obviously, a dentist can prescribe pain medication just like a physician.  So it may be faster and timelier as it relates to your issues if you see a dentist in the first place.  If you are in pain, you probably don’t want to waste the extra time it would take to see a physician first.  However, if you have an injury that is causing your dental emergency, make sure it is not life threatening before you choose between a physician and a dentist.

If you have a toothache, abscess, root canal problems, broken or chipped tooth, knocked out tooth, swollen gums, broken dentures, decayed tooth roots, loose crowns, lost fillings, wisdom teeth problems or pain in the mouth or gums, feel free to contact an emergency dentist.  We are more than happy to assist you in evaluating these types of situations.  In 2012 we added an endodontic experienced dentist to our practice, i.e. root canals.

Dentist Roswell: Dental Emergency? Physician or Dentist?

If you have ever had a toothache, you know it can be very painful.  And in some instances a toothache can be considered a dental emergency.  To complicate matters more, there may be some symptoms of a toothache that cause you to wonder whether or you should see a physician or a dentist. Events like a knocked out tooth or other injury of the mouth can often be resolved quickly if you see a dentist.

Dentist Dunwoody: Emergency Dental Tips

There are a number of simple precautions you can take to avoid accident and injury to your teeth. One way to reduce the chances of damage to your teeth, lips, cheek and tongue is to wear a mouthguard when participating in sports or recreational activities that may pose a risk. Avoid chewing ice, popcorn kernels and hard candy, all of which can crack a tooth. Cut tape using scissors rather than your teeth.
Accidents do happen, and knowing what to do when one occurs can mean the difference between saving and losing a tooth.
Tips for Dealing with Dental Emergencies:
Bitten Lip or Tongue
Clean the area gently with a cloth and apply cold compresses to reduce any swelling. If the bleeding doesn't stop, go to a hospital emergency room immediately.
Broken Tooth
Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area. Use cold compresses on the area to keep any swelling down. Call your dentist immediately.
Cracked Tooth
Depending on the size and location of the crack, treatment may vary from bonding to root canal treatment. A severely cracked tooth may need extraction. We will determine the best treatment for you.
Tiny cracks are common and usually do not cause problems. Regular dental checkups are important. They allow us to diagnose and treat problems in the early stage. If you continue to have pain, avoid chewing on that side of your mouth and call our Atlanta, GA dental office, that's what we are here for.
Jaw-Possibly Broken
Apply cold compresses to control swelling. Call us and/or go to a hospital emergency department immediately.
Knocked Out Tooth
Hold the tooth by the crown and rinse off the root of the tooth in water if it's dirty. Do not scrub it or remove any attached tissue fragments. If possible, gently insert and hold the tooth in its socket. If that isn't possible, put the tooth in a cup of milk and call us as quickly as possible. Remember to bring the tooth with you!
Objects Caught Between Teeth
Try to gently remove the object with dental floss; avoid cutting the gums. Never use a sharp instrument to remove any object that is stuck between your teeth. If you can't dislodge the object using dental floss, contact us.
Toothache
Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean it out. Gently use dental floss or an interdental cleaner to ensure that there is no food or other debris caught between the teeth. Never put aspirin or any other painkiller against the gums near the aching tooth because it may burn the gum tissue. If the pain persists, contact us.
