These dentists are trained to be experts in the field of aesthetic dentistry.  They are commonly considered the quarterbacks of implant dentistry.

Many prosthodontic dentists also help patients with maxillofacial procedures. Maxillofacial procedures are ones in which acquired and congenital defects are treated. These can be any defects of the head and neck due to trauma or injury, or they could be defects that were present at birth. However, in order to be licensed to practice maxillofacial procedures, a dentist must complete an additional year of training. This is an extra year after the three extra years required for becoming a prosthodontic dentist.

Cosmetic Dentistry Helps Self-Esteem of Children – Sandy Springs Dentist

Mom, children with damaged, discolored or missing teeth sometimes have problems with self-esteem that can be improved through aesthetic dentistry.

How To Find a Good Dentist? Sandy Springs

That’s really a tough question.  And for our practice (in Sandy Springs, GA) it’s even more difficult because we don’t advertise using conventional methods.  Ninety-five (95%) percent or more of our patients are referral based, either from an existing patient or another referring dentist.

Given our history and experience, we recommend asking for referrals from a co-worker or a neighbor.

If you have relocated from out of state to another city or state and want to find a good dentist, get a referral from your previous dentist or at least their second opinion.[1]  This is probably the best option as your previous dentist probably knows someone he went to school with or has a professional affiliation with.  It is unlikely that he would give you wrong advice.  If you simply are not happy with the services given by your current dentist, you can ask for recommendations from your co-workers, friends, family members, and other trusted individuals in your life.  We have found that once someone makes a referral, the referred patient will go to our web site or reviews to validate the referral.  A combination of a trusted referral borne out by independent research will usually lead you to the right dentist.

How to Find a Good Dentist?

If you are planning to undergo any kind of dental treatment, you need to make sure that you get the services suited to your needs.   Choosing a quality dentist with the right skills and experience is the deciding factor in the success of the treatment.  While price is a factor, a well-respected dentist with long standing roots in the community is not going to be overpriced.  You certainly would not want to base your decision on an inexpensive root canal and crown treatment which could turn out to be ineffective in just a few months.  Dental issues are no small matter. You should in no way compromise on the quality of the dental treatment based on price.

If it’s cosmetic dentistry you are seeking, then look for a prosthodontist.  Prosthodontic dentists are with the passage of time gaining popular recognition as patients become more familiar with the advances in dentistry and how they can enhance their everyday lives. They are expert dentists with a post graduate ADA recognized degree from a dental school centered around a complete knowledge of dentistry, where function and aesthetics are combined in the final result.

Location of the Dentist

Again this is a tough one.  You should not necessarily choose a dentist whose office is pretty close to where you work or live.  This will surely help you in case of a dental emergency, but with a quality dentist as a general rule you shouldn’t have emergencies.  Obviously, if you can find a quality dentist close to where you work or live in Atlanta, you will reduce hassle for you in driving many miles just for treatment which requires frequent visits.  But for twice a year cleanings and examinations a few more miles shouldn’t create any issues.

Whichever dentist you choose in your locality, always make sure that he/she is a certified member of the American Dental Association (ADA) and the Georgia Dental Association.  When you are comfortable with your referral, compare the services, charges, dental insurance formalities, and other determining factors, before choosing a suitable one.  After you find all the above conditions satisfactory, simply call for a consultation.

What are dental veneers? Dentist Sandy Springs tells all.

Veneers are wafer-thin laminates of tooth-colored material made of either porcelain, ceramic or composite bonding material.   They are bonded with cement to the front surface of teeth to improve their aesthetic appearance.   It’s really not that much different from brick on the front of one’s home.  Many dentists use the alternative analogy that dental veneers are for your teeth are what false fingernails are for your hands.  

What problems are veneers used to treat?

There are a wide variety of reasons why patients opt for treatment with dental veneers:

Stained teeth – badly stained or discolored teeth that cannot be improved by teeth whitening treatments can be significantly improved by dental veneers by covering any existing stains on your teeth.

Damaged teeth - teeth that have become badly worn as well as those that have been chipped, can be repaired by veneers.  A small chip on a tooth can quickly be repaired with composite bonding.   A single damaged tooth can easily be repaired with a porcelain veneer that has the same shade of color to match your natural teeth.

Gaps - spaces between your teeth can easily be closed using dental veneers, providing you a more uniform looking smile.

Crooked teeth -  For teeth that are not severely crooked, veneers placed over their surface can provide the illusion of a perfectly aligned smile.

So which are better: composite veneers or porcelain veneers?

The most popular type of veneer is porcelain, which offers a stronger and more durable alternative to its composite alternative.  Porcelain veneers also offer a more natural looking, translucent appearance. Composite veneers are more prone to staining and do not last as long as porcelain veneers.   Composite veneers are much cheaper than porcelain veneers in general, but considering that they do not last as long and need replacing more often, they could end up costing more in both time and money in the long run.  Composite work is ideal for small chips, as this treatment preserves more of your natural tooth structure.

How long do dental veneers last?

Porcelain veneers will typically last between five and ten years, while composite veneers last a year or two at most. The bottom line is that your veneers will eventually need to be replaced. Although veneers are strongly cemented into place, there have been cases where they come loose and fall off. In such situations, it is important that you keep hold of your veneer and contact your dentist immediately. To make your veneers last longer, follow a good oral hygiene program and visit your dentist for check-ups on a regular basis.

Is it possible to have veneers fitted on the same day?

Usually, porcelain veneers are placed over a minimum of two visits. A few cosmetic dentists have invested in CAM/CAD in-house ceramic studios such as E4D or CEREC, which can custom-produce high-quality ceramic veneers on-site in as little as twenty minutes. This technology enables the dental practice to offer single-visit, same-day ceramic veneers which are fitted within a couple of hours.  But either way the process is very technique sensitive.

ADA Recognized “Cosmetic Dentist”. a Prosthodontist – Dentist Sandy Springs

More and more dentists are calling themselves ‘cosmetic dentists’ when there is no cosmetic specialty in dentistry.   Regardless of this claim, the fact remains that the majority of dentist are general dentist who press the envelope of ethics by calling themselves ‘cosmetic dentists’. They all have undergraduate degrees and at least four years of dental school.   But not one of them has an American Dental Association sanctioned ‘cosmetic specialty’ in dentistry.   Those dentists who choose to make the claim do so by self-proclamation.   The American Dental Association (ADA) recognizes nine (9) post dental degree specialties and cosmetic dentistry is not one of them.  These specialties range in one to six years of advanced training beyond dental school.  At the end of this post doctorate training, these dentists receive additional certifications in their respective specialties becoming experts within their fields of dentistry.

These ADA specialties are:

Dental Public Heath, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Radiology and Surgery, Orthodontics, Endodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, and the least known, Prosthodontics.

Prosthodontics: (crown, bridge, and implants) According to Forbes Magazine, a prosthodontist is the rarest dental specialty in the country.  The rigorous program creates a dental specialty license pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of the oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues using biocompatible substitutes.  That’s a mouth full, pun intended.  Most dentists they take short weekend continuing education courses and utilize trial and error experience to be able to understand how size, shape, color and symmetry all work together to create what a prosthodontist is trained in their post graduate work.   The prosthodontist is trained at an ADA approved university to create the smile that implements the use of veneers, crowns, bridges and the new standard of care dental implants to ensure that the right smile is achieved, both functionally and aesthetically.

If anyone has a specialty in cosmetic dentistry or has the right to call themselves a ‘cosmetic dentist’, it would be the ADA recognized prosthodontist.  Of the 170 thousand dentists in the U.S., less than two (2%) percent are trained prosthodontists.  So when you are seriously looking for a cosmetic dentist, look for a prosthodontist.

How to Choose the Right ‘Cosmetic’ Dentist

Over the past decade there has been a dramatic appearance of ‘cosmetic dentists’ to the degree that almost every dentist is now a cosmetic dentist. Why? Basically, it's because there is no such thing as a cosmetic dentist and therefore it is unregulated.  And because the term ‘cosmetic’ is unregulated there is no shortage of dentists pressing the envelope of dental ethics.

So how do choose the right dentist?

1. Make sure your ‘cosmetic’ dentist is accredited by the American Dental Association and not just a member.  This would be a prosthodontic trained dentist, which is a 3 year post-doctoral dental degree specializing in aesthetic and functional dentistry.
2. Don’t be fooled by all of the organizations that provide unaccredited certifications.  The only accredited specialties are those approved by the American Dental Association and cosmetic dentistry is not an approved credential.
3.  Select a prosthodontist who performs cosmetic dentistry every day.  Creating the right smile is   a melding of art and science. 
4.  Look for real reviews and a history of longevity within the field of prosthodontics.
5.  Request a consult and ask to see before and after results.
6.  Finally, trust your instincts.
