Sandy Springs Dentist: Regular Dental Check-ups

One of the most common reasons people avoid the dentist is they think everything is OK. The logic is simple: no pain means no problems. Unfortunately, most dental conditions including cavities, gum disease and oral cancer give little or no warning, because they may remain painless for months or even many years.  By the time a person is in pain, the dental problem is usually so advanced that the treatment required may be much more involved and costly, and may necessitate more down time after completion.  In addition, those patients who choose not to have regular dental visits have statistically higher global health costs.
Every day, your dentist sees patients with untreated cavities that eventually cause infection to the nerves and blood supply within the tooth. A tooth that may have only needed a simple and inexpensive filling a few months ago may now require a root canal, surgical removal of the tooth and/or a crown, costing thousands instead of hundreds for dollars.
The same is true for patients with gum disease. Gum disease can progress quietly for many years before it becomes advanced and teeth become loose or cause pain. While early gum disease can usually be treated with a deep cleaning under the gum, advanced gum disease may require gum surgery and antibiotics.
Oral cancer is another issue your dentist looks for on every dental examination. Tragically, those who avoid dental care are often the victims of aggressive forms of oral cancer that are difficult to treat. Those who wait for an unusual growth in the mouth to become painful may be taking a gamble. Oral cancer has a 50%, five-year fatality rate.
The moral of the story is very simple:
visit your dentist at least twice a year for dental cleanings and check-up examinations.
It’s fairly inexpensive and you will save time and money, as well as significantly improve your oral health by treating all dental problems as soon as they occur. In fact, some research suggests that those in good dental health will actually live longer than people who do not take care of their teeth. It is also important for people without teeth to see their dentist at least once a year. The dentist will need to check the fit of removable dentures and also look for any signs of oral cancer.

Sandy Springs Dentist: Oral Health and Diabetes

According to the National Institutes of Health, about one-third of the 26 million Americans with diabetes have severe periodontal disease which is causing the gum tissue and bone around the teeth to break down.  Those that have poorly managed diabetes are almost 3 times more at risk of developing periodontitis.[1]  Essentially, patients with diabetes are more susceptible to bacterial infection, thus a higher risk of periodontitis.

There is extensive research on this subject matter, everywhere from the effects diabetes has on blood glucose, to inhibited salivary glands.  But the bottom line is if left untreated, periodontal disease leads to tooth loss and other serious oral health issues.  You should see your dentist more often if you have diabetes.  And you should ignore the implications of your health insurance not covering more than 2 visits, because your health is too important to put a price tag on.

We are a multi-specialty practice with in-house periodontal diagnosis and treatment serving Sandy Springs, Buckhead, Roswell, Dunwoody, East Cobb and surrounding communities.  We have been around for a long time.  If we can be of service please do not hesitate to contact us.  The consult is free.

Sandy Springs Dentist: Specializing in Aged Population

Dental Expenditures are a bargain… for now.

The overall average for personal healthcare has risen much faster than the average for all consumer items, nearly quadrupling in the past 25 years.  Whereas per capita spending dental costs have remained flat.[1]

Coupled with the effects of inflation and population growth the general shift from institutional care spending toward professional services has created little to no increase in ones dental costs. Medical care is increasingly delivered in outpatient care settings, often in physician offices or surgical care centers, which can be seen in the above diagram crossing of the real spending trends for institutional care and professional services that occurred in about 2000. Unlike other professional services, dentistry has not gained from the shift toward outpatient/professional services, having remained flat in real per capita spending for the past 25 years. Thus, while prices for dental services have grown generally as fast as the average for all personal healthcare services, dentistry has neither lost nor gained real ground in per capita use.[2]

Most dental coverage in the United States is obtained through employer-offered plans, and basic Medicare does not include such benefits. Seniors’ spending on dental care is, therefore, more sensitive to income than spending by younger age groups.  Whether dentistry will continue to maintain its relative position in per capita utilization depends, at least in part, on how the baby boom demographics will impact dental care demand in the next two decades.[3]

Dentist Sandy Springs: Dental Implant benefits

Dental Implants provide life changing benefits:
1.      They look and feel like your own teeth.
2.      They’re a comfortable and maintained like your natural teeth.
3.      You can eat your favorite foods and chew without fear.
4.      Renewed ability to speak properly
5.      Restoration of facial aesthetics
6.      Preservation of remaining jaw bone structure
7.      Cavity free
8.      Increased confidence and self-esteem
9.      They are an affordable, permanent solution that can last a lifetime.

Dental implants look and perform like real teeth. You can chew and eat like normal.  A tooth needs a root to hold it in place, and that’s precisely what a dental implant does.  You keep your dental implants clean using a toothbrush and floss, just like you would your natural teeth.  And  with proper care, dental implants will last a lifetime.  Dental implants give you a second chance at a natural smile – the right smile.

When searching online for pricing, you may notice that Dental Implants are often advertised below $1,000. Don’t be fooled into believing that your treatment will cost that much, because the truth is the restoration portion of the treatment probably isn’t factored into the total price, which in most cases is half the cost.  Plus you don’t know who manufactures your implant.
Dental implants are the best permanent way to help you get your smile back, along with your confidence. The best part is no one will know they’re implants unless you tell them.
Find out if you are a candidate for dental implants.  Call or email us now for a complimentary consult.  We have in-house placement and restoration by our periodontic and prosthodontic experts.

Dentists Atlanta : Dental Implants

Dental implants are among the most successful procedures in dentistry.  The studies show a five-year success rate of 95 percent for lower jaw implants and 90 percent for upper jaw implants.  The success rate for upper jaw implants is lower because the upper jaw is less dense than the lower jaw, making the success of implantation and osseointegration slightly more difficult to achieve.  The lower posterior implantation has the highest success rate for all dental implants because of the density of the bone, there’s more to work with.

However, there are no guarantees that an implant procedure will be successful.  Given the complexity of the procedure, there are many variables that can play into the success rate.  Some factors that have an impact on success are pre-existing dental or general health conditions or the position of the replaced tooth.  The most come reason is the failure of the implant device to properly osseo-integrate.  The actual failure of the implant may be the result of poor positioning or over torqueing in the bone.  Although infrequent, dental implants may break or become infected or crowns may become loose the same way your natural teeth become loose.

If you are a heavy smoker, your dentist may advise you to give up smoking before undergoing the procedure because smokers statistically face a higher risk of implant failure. Given how expensive implants can be, one risks wasting money on dental implants if you can’t give up the habit. Other high risk candidates are patients with diabetes, hemophilia or immune deficiencies and rare instances, patients with chronic bruxism.

When successful, the value of implants is significant with respect to bone retention and actual functionality, and they are not susceptible to the formation of cavities.  So as long as one engages in good oral hygiene, i.e. with brushing, flossing, and regular hygiene procedures, the chances of  inflammation or swelling of the tissues surrounding the implant should be avoidable.  This inflammation is similar to periodontitis around one’s natural tooth, and thus requires a similar approach to good oral hygiene.

Key factors in minimizing dental implant complications are the selection of an experienced prosthodontist and periodontist (or oral surgeon) who specialize in implant dentistry, careful pre-operative treatment planning and proper after-care and oral hygiene.  This can be optimally achieved if all of these operations are housed under one roofIf you would like to know whether you are a candidate for implants please feel free to call for a free consultation.

Roswell Dentist: Dental Implants are….

Your Natural Choice in Tooth Replacement.

Whenever a tooth is lost, if the bone structure will allow, it should be replaced with an implant.  Failure to replace the tooth with an implant will ultimately contribute to the loss of facial bone structure.  Dental implants are artificial tooth roots, which represent an alternative to dentures or bridgework.  The advantages vary from patient to patient and type of restoration but in addition to retained bone structure there may be improved chewing ability, better speech, a more secure fit of the restoration, greater comfort, and improved self-esteem.

The implant itself is made from Titanium and is surgically implanted in the jawbone to function in a similar way to a natural tooth root.  Depending on the individuals varying biological characteristics, it may be necessary for the implant to heal in the jawbone for a period of 3 to 6 months, which allows your bone to grow onto the implant in a process called Osseo-integration.

Once integrated, the implant is then exposed from the gum tissue, and a restoration consisting of one or more replacement teeth, is fabricated by the prosthodontist to fit on top of the implants.  In other cases it is possible to fit the teeth to the implants soon after implant placement, called immediate loading implants.

The restoration can be attached in several ways:

  • Removable structure, using special bars and clips.

  • Fixed or screw retained, using special screws and cement so that only your dentist can remove it, if necessary.

In the case of dentures, an implant-supported overdenture fits more securely than a conventional denture which rests on the gum tissue and offers no form of mechanical attachment.  The difference is the implants participate integrally in retaining bone structure in the jaw line.

Where a single tooth is lost, adjacent healthy teeth can often remain intact and unaffected by an implant-supported restoration.  This is unlike conventional bridgework where healthy teeth are structurally altered to support the bridge.

Implants are usually placed under local anesthesia in the periodontist’s or oral surgeon’s office.  The procedure involved in placing the implants is generally not painful and usually requires minimal recovery time and post-operative medication.

Only your dentist can tell whether you’re a candidate for dental implants.  Certain health conditions (like uncontrolled diabetes) or risk factors (like smoking) may preclude your ability to undergo implant therapy.  In addition, appropriate hygiene must be established prior to implant therapy and must be maintained to ensure the long-term success of the implant.  As part of a growing trend, we are now placing implants in our office.  If we can be of assistance or answer any of your concerns or questions please feel free to contact our office.
